  1. Check the hosts you live in. The bundle installs as AU and VST (ARM and x86 64-bit), so Logic, Ableton Live, Bitwig, or Reaper on macOS 10.13 or later are all fair game. There's no standalone app—you work entirely inside a DAW.
  2. Build a sound in Phase Plant. This is the centerpiece. A deep semi-modular synth where oscillators, samplers, and noise generators feed into a generator rack. Drag a wavetable in, twist the unison, then start patching modulators.
  3. Lay on the effects where they matter. Snap Heap is your single-band multi-effects rack. Stack Distortion, Chorus, and a splash of Convolver reverb and save it as a preset. For surgical work, Multipass splits the frequency range into three bands and lets you run a different Snap Heap on each—grime on the lows, width on the mids, air on the highs.
  4. Shape tone with the specialty tools. Disperser adds snappy transients by shifting phase, Faturator drives from warm saturation to square-wave destruction, and Carve EQ is a 31-band graphic for quick cuts. Slice EQ and Filter Table give you detailed, drawable curves when a standard parametric feels slow.

The whole thing runs on a shared codebase, so loading a preset from Phase Plant inside Snap Heap doesn't choke your session. It's a unified 28-plugin toolbox where the modular pieces actually talk to each other without sending your render bar into a crawl.

Before You Install — The FAQ Nobody Writes Down

Does this eat CPU the way Phase Plant suggests it might? Not in the way you'd think. A single instance with a wavetable osc and a few effects lanes sips resources on any Apple Silicon machine from the last three years. The hit comes from stacking—three Multipass bands each running a six-slot Snap Heap adds up. Freeze or bounce-in-place is your friend, but plenty of producers run a dozen Phase Plant tracks before they need to.

Do I need the whole bundle or can I cherry-pick? The installer puts all 28 plug-ins on your drive, Logic scans them as separate units, and you use what you use. Nobody forces you to open Filter Table if you live in Carve EQ. The only thing tying them together is the shared preset format, which is invisible until you drop a Phase Plant snapshot into Snap Heap and realize it just works.

Will it scan in an older DAW on Mojave? The minimum is macOS 10.13, and the k'd build loads as 64-bit AU and VST. If your host hasn't moved past 32-bit bridging, you're out of luck, but anything modern on High Sierra or later picks them up on the first scan.

Color and Problem-Solvers Sitting Beside Your Go-To EQ and Dynamics

These aren't replacements for the Logic stock compressor or the Ableton EQ Eight. They're color and problem-solvers that sit next to your go-tos. A typical chain in my sessions: stock channel EQ to clean the low mids, then Snap Heap with a touch of Faturator and the Kilohearts Chorus, then the DAW's limiter to catch peaks. The Kilohearts block handles the character; the built-ins handle the utility.

Multipass earns its keep on bass busses where you want distortion only above 200 Hz, leaving the sub clean. Draw a crossover, drop a distorted Snap Heap on the mid band, and leave the low band empty. That's three clicks and it's done—no routing three aux tracks and messing with sends. Slice EQ slides into sound design sessions where you're carving a sample for a sampler instrument and need curves you can see at a glance, not numbers you type.

The ecosystem plays nicely with collections like the kiloHearts Ultimate & Slate Digital Bundle Mac torrent crowd already runs, because these plug-ins don't fight for the same CPU threads that heavy analog-modeled compressors do. They're stripped-down DSP that leaves room for the hungrier stuff on your master bus.

Type Exact Values and Drag Presets Straight from Finder

  • Right-click a knob to type a value. Every Kilohearts control accepts a number straight from the keyboard. No shift-drag fine-tuning when you know you want exactly 3.2 dB of drive.
  • Drag a preset file from Finder onto a plug-in window. It loads instantly, no menu diving. I keep a folder of Snap Heap chains in the Dock for this.
  • Hold Option while dragging a band in Carve EQ. It adjusts gain only, freezing the Q and frequency, which is the opposite of the default behavior. Saves a trip to the settings panel.
  • The entire bundle updates together. One installer, one version number across all 28 plug-ins. When the 2.4.6 fix for ID3 tags and multi-process crashes landed, every tool in the collection got the patch at once. You're never chasing version mismatches between Phase Plant and Multipass.
  • Snap Heap presets live inside Phase Plant. Build an effects chain in Snap Heap, save it, and it appears in Phase Plant's effects lane browser with no export step. The modularity isn't just architecture—it's actual time saved when you're layering a kick.
