Too many open-world games feel like a theme park where nothing you do leaves a mark. You knock over a town, walk a mile down the road, and everyone's forgotten your face. ELEX II solves that by putting a real memory inside Magalan, a world already torn apart by a comet and now threatened by a new alien menace. People remember that you stole from them. They remember who you sided with, and they will absolutely hold a grudge. It's the kind of consequence-driven chaos you'd expect from Piranha Bytes, the studio behind Gothic and Risen.

A typical session starts with a simple goal—maybe you need better armor to stop dying in two hits. So you jetpack onto a crumbling overpass to snipe a few mutant bugs for their chitin. On the way back, you bump into a faction patrol. A quick conversation can spiral into a loyalty quest because the NPCs don't just hand out tasks; they judge you based on your past actions. Combat is a mix of clumsy early-game desperation and later-game precision, switching between a rusty pipe, a shotgun, and a jetpack dodge. Every fight carries weight because if an important character falls during a skirmish, they stay dead. The story forks around that corpse. It's a sequel that refuses to hold your hand, where minute-to-minute survival hinges on who you trust and when you run.

Day-One Tips That Save Hours

Don't treat the jetpack like a late-game toy. Use it immediately to break enemy tracking — a short vertical burst confuses most melee attackers long enough to pop a healing item or switch weapons. Also, bind your quick-save key to something you can hit without looking. The autosave is stingy, and a random mutant pack can erase twenty minutes of exploration.

Spend your first attribute points on Constitution and Dexterity even if you plan a pure mage build later. The early hours punish glass cannons brutally. A single point in the Lockpicking skill pays for itself within two settlements — locked chests in Magalan often hold elex potions and uncommon weapon blueprints that vendors never stock.

And talk to everyone twice. Some NPC dialogue trees branch only after you leave and return, a Piranha Bytes quirk that hides companion recruitment triggers behind a second visit.

Permanent Companion Death Raises the Gothic-Like Stakes

If you've played Gothic II or the first Risen, the rhythm here is familiar — weak start, no level scaling, factions that lock you out of other factions' gear. ELEX II tightens that formula by making companion mortality permanent, something neither Gothic nor Risen attempted at this scale. Where those games let key NPCs fall unconscious, here a dead ally removes entire quest chains permanently.

Against Elden Ring, the comparison gets trickier. Both are open-world and punishing, but ELEX II cares far more about dialogue trees and faction reputation than boss mechanics. Elden Ring's combat is tighter; ELEX II's world is more reactive. If you enjoy Kingdom Come: Deliverance for its consequence modeling, ELEX II scratches a similar itch, though with sci-fi weapons and a jetpack instead of historical armor layers.

Gatekeeper Blocks the Binary, Giving You a Black Screen

The most frequent headache is a black screen on launch with audio playing in the background. This usually means the Gatekeeper quarantine is blocking the binary. Running xattr -cr /Applications/ELEX2.app && codesign --force --deep --sign - /Applications/ELEX2.app from Terminal strips the quarantine flag and re-signs the bundle. Reboot the Mac afterward — skipping the reboot often leaves the fix incomplete.

Another stubborn issue: cutscene audio desyncs by a full second on M1 Macs running Ventura. The workaround is counterintuitive — cap the frame rate to 60 in the game's settings, even if your display can push higher. The engine's video playback ties to frame timing, and an uncapped rate drifts the audio track.

If companion pathfinding breaks during a quest (Caja is notorious for getting stuck on cliff geometry), fast-travel to the nearest teleporter and sleep at a camp bed for six hours. That resets their position without abandoning quest progress. Do it before the next autosave, or the stuck state can persist across reloads.

Questions I actually get

Can NPCs actually die in ELEX II?

Yes. Almost every non-player character is mortal. If they die during combat or because of your choices, they are permanently gone and their part of the story closes off.

Does it run natively on Apple Silicon Macs?

Yes. It was tested successfully on macOS Ventura running on a 2020 MacBook Air with the M1 chip, supporting both Intel and Apple Silicon architectures.
