This one is for the meticulous planner who loses an evening to intersection design. You start with a patch of land and a highway connection, then zone, pipe, and wire your way toward a metropolis. The simulation models every citizen and vehicle, so a badly timed traffic light can domino into gridlock across the map. Colossal Order built their reputation on the Cities in Motion transit sims, and that pedigree shows in the traffic flow — it's detailed enough to be a puzzle in itself.

Managing Districts and Services

Lay down water, power, police, fire, and education services, then slice the city into districts with their own policies. The day-and-night cycle shifts traffic patterns, and you can tweak everything from recycling rules to a ban on heavy vehicles in a neighborhood.

Shaping the Map

The built-in editor lets you sculpt terrain and draw new building lots, or build an asset from scratch. If the stock maps don't fit the vision you have, reshape them until they do.

Rosetta Roulette on Apple Silicon

This is an Intel build, so Apple Silicon Macs run it through Rosetta 2. Expect smooth camera movement on a dedicated GPU, but lean on the graphics settings if the simulation chugs once the population ticks past six figures — the CPU bears the weight of every simulated trip to work.

When the Pathfinding Tax Comes Due

On an Intel Mac with a discrete GPU, the simulation cruises at 30–60 fps through the early milestones. The real test arrives when you hit six-digit populations and the CPU starts tracking tens of thousands of individual pathfinding decisions. Frame pacing stays consistent if you dial down shadow distance and level-of-detail. Memory pressure is modest — the game idles around 4 GB, creeping up with workshop assets. Stability is solid on the 1.21.1-f9 build; I have left it running through a day-night cycle without a quit, and the autosave slots have never corrupted on me. The Intel-only binary means Apple Silicon Macs route everything through Rosetta 2, which adds a tiny translation tax during the initial splash screen but nothing you would notice once the city is on screen.

Bind Traffic Toggle Before You Zone

Before you zone a single block, open the options and bind a key to toggle traffic info — it becomes your most-used view. Under gameplay settings, switch the day-night cycle budget to manual while you learn the rhythm of service costs. In the content manager, disable the pre-installed European style unless you plan to use it; fewer loaded assets mean a faster boot.

On the map screen, pick a flat tile with a river connection. Water flow direction matters more than you think — sewage downstream, pumps upstream, or the whole town gets sick. Unpause only after you have drawn the arterial road off the highway, laid power lines from the starter wind turbine to the first water pump, and run a pipe spine under where your residential grid will go. That prevents a cascade of abandonment notices before you even name the place.

A Traffic Fix, End to End

Say an industrial district backs up every evening shift change. Open the traffic overlay, find the red segment, and follow the vehicles upstream. Most often the culprit is a single four-way intersection handling both through traffic and local deliveries.

Pause the sim. Bulldoze a two-block stretch of the collector road and replace it with a roundabout using the road-building tool — three nodes, curve segments, yield signs on entries. For the trucks turning left across traffic, draw a slip lane that bypasses the roundabout entirely and feeds straight into the cargo terminal. Add a district policy banning heavy vehicles on the parallel residential street, then unpause.

Watch the junction through a full cycle. The queue should drain within two light rotations. If not, check that buses are not bunching at a stop right before the roundabout entry; sometimes moving a stop one block back unclogs the whole sequence.

Questions I actually get

Does the day-and-night cycle affect gameplay?

Yes. Traffic patterns shift as people commute or go home, and service demand can change between day and night.

Can I create my own buildings and maps?

Absolutely. The game includes editors for making new maps, placing buildings, or modifying existing assets to fit your city.

What languages does the interface support?

It includes Russian, English, German, Spanish, Simplified Chinese, Polish, Portuguese, and French.
