Two expansions, one photo mode, and a shape-shifting brutalist office tower. That’s what lands on your drive with the Control Ultimate Edition Mac torrent. The 1.33.1 build ships the complete 2019 Remedy package recompiled for Apple Silicon, so you get the base campaign, the Foundation DLC, the AWE crossover, and the wave-based Expeditions mode in a single download.

Unpacking the Modes

  1. The Oldest House. Start with Jesse Faden walking into a federal building that rearranges itself when you blink. The main story runs about twelve hours and teaches you to rip chunks of concrete out of the walls with telekinesis before ever handing you a pistol.
  2. Foundation. Once the credits roll, the floor caves in. This expansion tunnels beneath the Bureau into red-sand caves and introduces crystal-based abilities that rewrite how you cross a room.
  3. AWE. The Investigations Sector ties directly into Alan Wake. Dark hallways, a recurring monster that hates light, and a story that Remedy fans will want to play twice.
  4. Expeditions. A timed gauntlet in the Formation. You pick modifiers, load a weapon build, and push for leaderboard times. It’s the mode that stress-tests the weapon customization system—swapping mods between a spinning shrapnel launcher and a sniper-form Service Weapon changes a run completely.

HDR is enabled on supported MacBook Pro and desktop displays, and every boss fight—from the levitating Salvador to the distorted Mold-1—hits the same frame pacing as the PC original when running on an M1 or later. The interface ships in thirteen languages, including Russian voice work via an optional community mod. No launcher, no season pass; one icon, all the Oldest House has to offer.

A Typical Session Inside the Oldest House

You launch the app from a cold start on a MacBook Air M1. The menu loads in under ten seconds—no launcher, no account prompt. You hit Continue and pick up mid-campaign in the Containment Sector, standing outside the Panopticon.

Jesse’s weapon wheel shows the Grip form with a damage mod slotted. You swap to Shatter, pull up a concrete pillar with Launch, and step into a corridor where Hiss guards are clustered around a control point. Two of them catch the pillar; the third takes a close-range Shatter blast before it can shield. The frame rate stays smooth, even with particle debris scattering across the tile floor. You claim the control point, fast-travel to Central Research, and trigger a side mission from a file on a desk—no cutscene, just a new marker on the map.

Twenty minutes later you’re in the Foundation DLC, riding a crystal elevator down into a cave system. The ability to grow and shatter crystal platforms turns a simple traversal puzzle into a combat arena. A Hiss Sharpened sprints sideways along a wall, and you fire a crystal spike into its path, then follow with a Launch double-tap. The sound design down here is all low rumble and distant chime. You finish the fight, collect a case file, and open the photo mode to frame Jesse mid-levitate against a wall of red sandstone. One screenshot, quit to menu—no need to babysit a save file. The game already handled it.

Executive Sector Elevator No Longer Hitches

The 1.33.1 fix tightens a few things that used to nag. On an M1 Air, the Executive Sector elevator transition no longer hitches for a half-second while streaming textures—that’s gone now. Quick-resume from sleep is more reliable too; previously, tabbing away and coming back could drop the Metal renderer, forcing a restart. I haven’t seen that since the update.

MetalFX upscaling also got a small tuning pass. On Quality mode, distant signage in the Research Sector reads sharper than before, which helps during the AWE expansion where you’re scanning dark hallways for hidden doors. If you’re running on an M3 or M4 Mac with ray tracing enabled, the reflections in the Oceanview Motel’s flooded floor now resolve without the shimmer that earlier builds showed. Nothing dramatic—just the kind of polish that makes a second playthrough feel closer to the developer’s intent.

Also fixed: a rare crash when switching weapon forms during the Mold-1 boss fight, and an audio dropout in the Russian voice mod that occurred after cutscene skips. The community pack from GamesVoice now stays locked to the timeline properly.

Shader Compilation Stutter in First Ten Minutes

Stutter on first launch. The game compiles shaders the moment you start a new campaign or load a save. On a base M1, expect a few stutters during the first ten minutes in a new area. It evens out once the cache is built. Don’t tweak graphics settings to fix it—just play through the lobby sequence.

Mysterious black screen after sleep. If you close the lid mid-mission and come back to a black screen with audio, it’s the Metal renderer stalling. Quit and relaunch. The 1.33.1 build reduces this, but it can still happen on macOS Sequoia with external monitors attached.

Expeditions matchmaking confusion. There is no matchmaking. Expeditions are solo timed runs. The terminal in the Executive Sector lists a leaderboard, but you’re competing against saved times, not live players. The UI doesn’t spell this out clearly, so new players sometimes wait at the Formation entrance expecting a lobby.

Language mismatch in the AWE DLC. If you’re running the Russian voice mod and playing AWE, a couple of late-game Hotline calls from Alan Wake play in English regardless of your audio setting. It’s a known quirk of the mod’s subtitle mapping, not a corrupt download. Switching the voice language to English and back sometimes resets it; if not, the subtitles still carry the Russian text.

Questions I actually get

Does the Mac version include all the DLC?

Yes, the Ultimate Edition build includes both the Foundation and AWE expansions plus the Expeditions mode in one ARM-native app.
