DiRT 4 puts you in the seat of a purpose-built off-road machine, chasing stage times across loose gravel, thick mud, and broken tarmac. A co-driver calls the road ahead while you balance throttle against grip, always a correction away from a spin or a perfect Scandinavian flick.

What You Control Every Race

  • Car setup and class. You pick from rallycross supercars, buggies, historic Group B monsters, and dirt trucks. Ride height, differential, and damper settings are all adjustable before a stage.
  • Pace notes. Your co-driver feeds you corner severity and surface changes. You set the call timing—early or late—to match your reaction speed.
  • Your Stage. A route generator that builds a new rally stage from parameters you choose: location, length, complexity, and weather. No two runs are identical.
  • Surface response. The car shifts weight across ruts and cambers. Hard-packed clay grips differently than wet Welsh gravel, and you feel it through the wheel or controller.

Strict Rally, Tuning, and Door-to-Door Chaos

This is a disciplined, stage-by-stage rally game, not an open-world bash. You spend as much time tuning differentials and listening to pace notes as you do sideways in fourth gear. The Landrush and rallycross modes add door-to-door chaos when you need a break from the clock. It runs on Intel Macs and was tested smooth on a Mac mini M4 under macOS Tahoe.

Cut Deeper Ruts with Surface Degradation

Some of the smartest touches in DiRT 4 live in menus you rarely linger on. The co-driver pace note timing slider is the obvious one, but try the surface degradation model in a custom championship. Later cars cut deeper ruts into a stage, so running order genuinely matters if you set a full rally weekend instead of a single sprint. In Time Trial, ghost cars default to your own best run—switch it to a friend’s ghost or a global top-ten replay from the leaderboard, and suddenly you’re stealing braking points from drivers two seconds quicker.

A few other shortcuts worth knowing:

  • Quick repair between stages. Hit the d-pad left or right on the service area menu to jump straight to the parts screen without scrolling through every tab.
  • Flash-to-pass. In rallycross, a tap of the headlight button flickers high beams during joker-lap battles. It’s purely cosmetic, but it sells the door-banging atmosphere.
  • Replay camera presets. The number keys jump between trackside, helicopter, and bumper cams instantly during a replay—no cycling through a dozen angles.
  • Weather slot experiments. Your Stage lets you dial in two weather slots per stage. Morning sun into afternoon downpour doesn’t just change grip; standing water accumulates in the same dips lap after lap.

A Rallycross Builder’s Afternoon

A track builder downloads the DiRT 4 Mac torrent on a Friday, boots it on an Intel iMac, and heads straight to Your Stage. He’s not a rally purist—he wants short-course rallycross circuits that feel like the local fairground tracks he raced as a teenager. He sets location to Michigan, length to short, complexity to low, and weather to heavy cloud. The generator spits out a tight circuit with a long right-hander that sweeps into a tabletop jump, followed by a hairpin that punishes anyone who carries too much speed over the crest.

He runs it ten times in a Super 1600-spec Ford Fiesta, adjusting the differential preload each session until the car rotates predictably under lift-off. By lap seven, the racing line is worn to hard-packed dirt through the first sector while the outside of Turn 3 stays loose and damp. He saves the stage, names it after his hometown, and drops into a four-car rallycross final against the AI set to “Demanding.” The AI doesn’t cheat—it just makes fewer mistakes than the lower difficulties, and it uses the joker lap tactically. He finishes third after a botched Scandinavian flick, swears at his co-driver’s late call, and immediately starts another round.

Why the DiRT Academy Teaches Left-Foot Braking

Before you commit to a full career season, spend thirty minutes in DiRT Academy. It’s not a throwaway tutorial—the gravel and tarmac modules teach weight transfer and left-foot braking in a controlled space, and the instructor actually explains why a pendulum turn works instead of just barking commands. You come out faster, and you learn which surface types punish your favorite car class.

Next, go to the controls menu and bind a clutch pedal or button even if you race with automatic gears. A quick clutch kick mid-corner can save a bogged-down exit on loose surfaces, and it’s the fastest way to rotate a stubborn Group B car. While you’re there, turn off the on-screen racing line—the co-driver calls are detailed enough that the visual overlay becomes a distraction, especially on stages where rocks and camber already demand your eyes stay up the road.

Finally, build a short custom championship mixing two surfaces—say, a wet Welsh gravel stage followed by a dry Spanish tarmac sprint. You’ll learn more about chassis tuning in that one pairing than in a hundred single-surface runs, because the setup compromises become real. Save that championship as a template and use it to test any car you’re curious about before taking it online.

Questions I actually get

Can I create my own rally stages?

Yes, the Your Stage system lets you generate a custom route by choosing the location, stage length, complexity, and weather conditions.

What types of cars are included?

The roster covers modern rally cars, historic Group B icons, rallycross supercars, buggies, and dirt trucks, each with adjustable setups.

What languages does the co-driver speak?

The co-driver voice is available in English, German, Spanish, Italian, Polish, and French.
