You boot up the game on a MacBook Pro, and Night City unfolds around V — a mercenary chasing survival and a reputation while pushing back against the city's heaviest players. The Ultimate Edition puts the whole picture in one box: the base game, plus the Dogtown storyline that adds Solomon Reed, voiced by Idris Elba, to the mix.

Character building stays open-ended. Abilities and cybernetic implants combine in whatever direction suits the run — stealth, netrunning, raw chrome, or a messy hybrid. The Dogtown content slots into that loop rather than sitting beside it, giving the extra storyline the same build freedom and same hostile streets. One download, both chapters, and a city that doesn't care which one you're playing.

Day-One Settings Worth Changing

The default controls work, but a few tweaks make Night City feel far more responsive on a Mac trackpad or mouse. Open the gameplay tab and dial the camera sensitivity down by 15 to 20 percent — the stock setting overshoots during fast turns, especially inside cramped apartments and megabuilding corridors. While you are there, switch crouch to toggle instead of hold. Stealth sections demand long periods ducked behind cover, and holding a key through a three-minute recon loop gets old fast.

Two more that matter early. Turn off the film grain slider entirely. Night City is already heavy with neon haze and volumetric fog; the added noise just fights the renderer on a Mac display, and it costs a few frames you would rather spend elsewhere. And under accessibility, bump the subtitle size up one notch. The dialogue moves fast, and the default text gets swallowed during firefights where half the crew is shouting over gunfire.

First Hours: What Actually Helps

Resist the urge to mainline the story. The prologue locks you into a tight corridor for the first hour, but once the Watson district opens fully, do three things before chasing the next mission marker. First, find a ripperdoc with a leg implant — the reinforced tendons or the double-jump legs. Verticality opens up rooftops, alternate entry points, and escape routes that change how a gig plays out. Second, clear two or three NCPD scanner hustles. They are quick, they pay in eddies and street cred, and the loot fills the gaps in a starter loadout without grinding. Third, steal a motorcycle. Cars are fun, but nothing weaves through highway traffic and back alleys like a bike when you need to cross the map fast.

The Mac version leans heavily on Apple silicon's unified memory, so close any background apps that chew through RAM before launching. A Safari window with twenty tabs open is not your friend when Night City streams in three districts at once. Also, the AutoDrive improvements from patch 2.31a make Free Roam a genuinely useful way to scope a neighborhood while you check messages or craft ammo — the vehicles no longer brake for every green light, and they navigate around blocked lanes without jerking the camera around.

A Fixer's Morning in Dogtown

A netrunner build needs a specific rhythm, and Dogtown delivers it. You wake V in a cramped safehouse, already mid-gig — a data extraction from a Hansen lieutenant holed up in an old stadium concourse. The approach starts on foot, weaving through collapsed walkways while tagging cameras through walls with the Ping quickhack. One camera reveals three guards, a turret, and a locked terminal. You queue up a Short Circuit on the turret to disable it silently, then Overheat on a guard near the terminal to pull the others away from the objective. No shots fired, no alarms. The upload finishes while the patrol is still dragging a body out of sight. You walk out through a side corridor nobody ever checks, grab a bike parked two blocks down, and let the Free Roam drive you back to the fixer while you sort the inventory. That kind of clean loop — no reloads, no panic — relies on settings dialed in early and hardware that does not buckle under the lighting load. On an Apple silicon Mac with 16 GB or more, the framedrops stay rare, and the immersion holds.
