If you've ever lost an afternoon to the built-in driving dynamics of a game like Mario Kart, you'll recognize the drift-and-boost DNA running through Asphalt 8. Gameloft takes that foundation and swaps cartoon shells for licensed motor vehicles, throwing more than 150 cars and bikes at you across gravity-defying tracks. It's loud, it's slick, and on a Mac with an M-series chip or a capable Intel machine, it runs exactly how you'd want a no-thoughts-just-speed racer to run.

The vehicle list is genuinely absurd. You're not just picking between a few stat blocks; the garage includes over 2,300 decals to tweak your ride's look between events. The real meat, though, sits in the 1,500 mastery challenges layered on top of the standard race seasons. You can dip in for a quick three-lap sprint or dig into a specific challenge series that demands a particular car class, which gives the game a longer tail than its arcade label suggests.

Across more than 40 tracks, the physics stick to the rule of cool. Barrel rolls off ramps, 360-degree spiral jumps, and takedowns on rival racers are your main vocabulary. It shares space across your Apple devices too, syncing progress between your Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV, so the grind follows you wherever you decide to knock out a few events.

It's a game from 2013 that still gets the fundamentals right. No sim-racing tire temperatures, no tuning menus that feel like a spreadsheet. Just a huge pile of cars, a long list of challenges, and a handling model built to make you feel faster than you probably are.

Why Maxing One D-Class Car Pays Off Faster

Resist the urge to buy every car you can afford. Credits come fast early on but dry up right when mid-tier upgrades start costing serious coin. Pick one D-class car, max its acceleration and top speed first, and let it carry you through the first two seasons. A fully upgraded starter car will beat an un-upgraded B-class machine every time in the early career events.

Spend your first few sessions in the Career mode, not Multiplayer. The structured seasons teach you track layouts without the pressure of getting dusted by a veteran in a maxed-out Lamborghini. By the time you hit Season 4, you'll instinctively know which corners reward a drift and which ramps you can triple-tap for a perfect nitro boost. That muscle memory is what keeps you off the walls online.

Also, turn off the auto-accelerate assist on day one. It feels helpful for about twenty minutes, then it becomes the thing that throws you into a barrier when you're trying to feather speed through a tricky chicane. Manual control over throttle and brake is where the handling model actually reveals its nuance.

The 9 p.m. Decal Detour That Swallows Your Night

You open the game at 9 p.m. intending to knock out two career events. The garage screen hits, and that new decal set you earned from yesterday's mastery challenge is sitting unclaimed. Three minutes later your McLaren is matte orange with black racing stripes. Fine. Time to race.

You jump into a Season 7 event in Tokyo. First attempt, you miss the final ramp's barrel roll and land sideways into a wall. Fifth place. The nitro management was off — you burned the perfect boost too early. Second run, you hold the drift through the long reverse-banked curve, tap the nitro on exit, and hit the ramp at the right angle for a clean rotation. First place, and the game throws a new bike at you as a reward. You spend the next twenty minutes doing time-limited events because one of them offers double credits on knockdowns. It's 10:30 p.m. The two events you came for are done. The other four races just happened along the way.

Questions Before the Install

Remap Drift to Spacebar and Skip the Controller

Keyboard controls are responsive once you remap the default layout. Put drift on the spacebar and nitro on a comfortable key near your left hand. A controller does feel more natural for the stunt-heavy sections, but plenty of players rip through career seasons on a keyboard alone. The game recognizes most Bluetooth controllers instantly, including PlayStation and Xbox pads.

Save Room for Shader Cache and Replays After Installing

The disk image clocks in at a size that won't choke a standard broadband connection, but you'll want a good chunk of free space after installation for the shader cache and saved replays. Apple Silicon Macs handle the asset loading with zero drama; Intel machines might see slightly longer initial load times, but nothing that disrupts the flow once you're in a race.

Same Absurd Jumps, Now Without Thermal Throttling

Same garage, same events, same absurd jumps. The Mac version, labeled Airborne+, runs natively on Apple Silicon and Intel hardware without the thermal throttling or screen smudges. Your progress stays in sync through iCloud, so you can grind a few challenges on your phone during a commute and pick up the rewards later on the big screen. The track visuals hold up nicely at higher resolutions, and the frame rate stays locked where it matters most — mid-barrel-roll, with three cars inches from your rear bumper.

Questions I actually get

Does Asphalt 8: Airborne+ run on Apple Silicon Macs?

Yes, the game runs natively on both Apple Silicon and Intel 64-bit Macs, requiring macOS 11.0 or later.

What kind of vehicles are in the game?

The garage features more than 150 official racing vehicles, including both cars and motorcycles, with over 2,300 decals available for customization.
